The town of Gelibolu is located on the peninsula of the same name at the northern entrance of the Dardanelles. Its history dates back to antiquity, but it gained worldwide recognition through the 1915 Gallipoli campaign during World War I. In the town center, the Piri Reis Museum and a 17th-century whirling dervish lodge (Mevlevihane) represent its cultural heritage. The coastline of the peninsula features swimming opportunities facing both the Dardanelles and the Saros Gulf. Güneyli Plajı and Fatma Kadın Plajı feature shallow, sandy beaches. Kömür Koyu and Mavi Saroz Plajı are popular diving and swimming locations. Despot Plajı and Armankaya Koyu are situated in a rockier, natural environment. Local gastronomy is heavily based on maritime fishing; the town is particularly known for its sardines and the related canning industry. Regular ferries depart from the harbor to Lapseki on the opposite shore, connecting the European and Asian continents.
