Evros Delta (Greece)

Weather…

The Evros Delta is situated on the border between Greece and Turkey, forming one of the most ecologically significant estuarine ecosystems in the Mediterranean. The Evros River (known as Meriç in Turkish) travels over 480 kilometers before emptying into the Aegean Sea, creating a complex mosaic of lagoons, freshwater marshes, salt marshes, and sand dunes. The delta covers an area of approximately 200 square kilometers and is internationally protected under the Ramsar Convention and the Natura 2000 network. With over 320 recorded bird species, it serves as a critical wintering ground and stopover for millions of migratory birds on the Palearctic flyway. Notable inhabitants include flamingos, various heron species, and the extremely rare slender-billed curlew. The mixing of fresh and salt water fosters a rich fish fauna, which provides the livelihood for local sustainable fishing communities. Despite its border location and human pressures, the delta has maintained its wild character and remains an indispensable sanctuary for European biodiversity.
