Chenini is one of Tunisia's most striking hilltop villages, perched on a ridge in the Dahar Mountains. The village is a prime example of Berber architecture, where dwellings are carved directly into the soft limestone rock. Terraced houses cling to the slopes, leading up to an ancient ksar (fortified granary) that once protected the community's harvests. A striking feature is the brilliant white mosque that stands in stark contrast to the ochre-colored cliffs. Nearby lies the legendary Mosque of the Seven Sleepers, steeped in mystical tales. Chenini remains inhabited by Berber families who preserve their language and traditions, giving the site a lively sense of authenticity. Food-wise, be sure to taste the local olive oil and flatbreads baked in traditional ovens. The best time to explore is early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun and capture the best light for photography. Chenini is located about 18 kilometers from Tataouine and is easily accessible by car or through guided tours.
