Great Mosque of Mahdia (Tunisia)

Weather…

The Great Mosque of Mahdia is a significant example of Fatimid architecture, originally built in 916 by Ubayd Allah al-Mahdi. Located in the historic center of the city on a narrow peninsula, the structure is characterized by its simple yet powerful aesthetic. A unique feature is the monumental entrance portal on the northern side, which resembles Roman triumphal arches and grants access to the spacious inner courtyard. Unlike most other mosques in the region, it does not have a minaret, as the call to prayer was traditionally made from one of the corner towers. The mosque was severely damaged during the Spanish occupation in the 16th century and was extensively reconstructed in the 20th century to restore its original appearance. Today, it remains a tranquil place of worship and an impressive testament to early Islamic rule in North Africa.
