Rayong is a pivotal industrial and agricultural center on Thailand's eastern seaboard along the Gulf of Thailand. The city and its surrounding areas play a critical role in the national economy, largely due to the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate, one of Southeast Asia's largest petrochemical and heavy industry hubs. Despite its industrial significance, Rayong remains famous for its agricultural output, particularly premium tropical fruits such as durian, rambutan, and mangosteen. Historically, the city is deeply connected to Sunthorn Phu, Thailand's national poet, who was born in the region in the 18th century and whose epic 'Phra Aphai Mani' immortalized local landscapes. Rayong's coastline stretches over 100 kilometers, offering numerous beaches and serving as the primary gateway to the popular resort island of Koh Samet. The city is also a foundation of the Thai fishing industry, widely recognized for producing high-quality fish sauce used throughout the country.
