Buddha Mountain (Khao Chi Chan) is a remarkable feature of the geography and culture of Thailand. A giant golden Buddha engraving on the side of a limestone hill near Pattaya, created to honor King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Created in 1996 for the King's 50th anniversary on the throne. The image is 109 meters tall. The engraving was created using laser technology. This landmark is part of the cultural heritage of Thailand, often linked to Buddhist temples, wats and royal architecture. Like many notable places in Thailand, it combines regional character with the legacy of the Chao Phraya, the Mekong and Buddhist tradition. Visiting
The Buddha engraving is accessible from the outside 24/7 since it's carved into the cliff face. Entry is typically free as it's an open area, though the nearby viewing platform may have separate rules.
Typical hours
As an outdoor monument, it can theoretically be visited at any hour. However, early morning or late afternoon are recommended to avoid the intense midday heat and get better lighting for photos.
Photography
Photography is allowed freely from the public viewing platforms. Drones are typically banned because the site is close to a military area, so stick to handheld cameras.
Time needed
Allow about 30 to 45 minutes to reach the viewing point and take photos. If you also explore the nearby temples or the small park, budget around one hour in total.
Combine with
Buddha Mountain is about 20 km south of Pattaya and combines well with a visit to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. The beaches of Jomtien or the Sanctuary of Truth are also great additions for a day trip.
Getting there
The easiest way is by car or taxi via Sukhumvit Road, then turning off towards Khao Chi Chan. Organized tours from Pattaya that cover multiple attractions also include this stop.
Insider tip
Visit early in the morning to beat the crowds and the heat - you'll get the best light for photos. Bring plenty of water as there is little shade at the site.
