Mbeya is a bustling city in the southern highlands of Tanzania, set at the base of Mount Loleza at an elevation of about 1700 meters. Founded in the 1920s following a gold rush in the region, the city rapidly developed into a key administrative and economic center for the southwestern part of the country. Located at the intersection of main highways leading to Zambia and Malawi, and along the TAZARA railway line, Mbeya serves as a crucial logistics hub. The region is famous for its fertile volcanic soils and is Tanzania's primary production area for coffee, tea, bananas, and potatoes. Nearby attractions include impressive natural phenomena such as the Mbozi Meteorite, one of the largest in the world, and the Chimala Escarpment. The city also acts as a gateway for excursions to the nearby Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi). Its cooler mountain climate distinguishes Mbeya from Tanzania's hot coastal areas.
