Lake Rukwa (Tanzania)

Weather…

Lake Rukwa is a large, endorheic alkaline lake in southwestern Tanzania, situated in a parallel branch of the Great Rift Valley. It is located halfway between Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi. The lake is known for extreme fluctuations in its water level; in the past, it has dried up almost completely, only to cover an area of over 2,500 square kilometers years later. Due to its remoteness, it is hardly developed for tourism, yet it hosts one of the largest populations of crocodiles and hippos in East Africa. The surrounding area is characterized by open grasslands and Miombo woodlands, rich in wildlife. The lake is also an important fishing ground for the local population, with the Rukwa tilapia being an endemic species found only in this body of water.
