The Great Ruaha River is one of Tanzania's most significant water bodies and the lifeblood of the Ruaha National Park. It originates in the Kipengere Range and flows for over 475 kilometers through diverse landscapes before joining the Rufiji River. The river is vital for the survival of massive wildlife populations, including hippos, crocodiles, and large elephant herds that congregate along its banks during the dry season. Geographically, it drains a catchment area of about 68,000 square kilometers and is a central source of national hydroelectric power through the Mtera and Kidatu dams. In recent decades, the river has faced severe ecological challenges as upstream irrigation for agriculture caused it to cease flowing periodically. Conservation efforts are now focused on restoring its natural flow to safeguard the delicate ecosystem and its rich biodiversity.

Getting there

Access is primarily through the rugged tracks of Ruaha National Park, typically requiring a sturdy 4x4 safari vehicle. Most visitors reach the riverbanks via guided game drives originating from lodges within or near the park.

The dry season, spanning from June to October, is the best time for viewing wildlife. As the river slowly shrinks into vital shrinking pools, massive concentrations of thirsty animals gather closely along its exposed banks.

The environment surrounding the river is composed of dusty savannas, striking baobab groves, and dense riparian woodlands. The riverbed itself can range from a rushing torrent during rains to dry sandy stretches in summer.
