Isimila Stone Age Site (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Isimila Stone Age Site near Iringa is an exceptional archaeological and geological monument in Tanzania. Discovered in the 1950s, the site yielded one of the world's most significant collections of Acheulean hand axes, estimated to be between 300,000 and 1.5 million years old. These findings prove that early human ancestors utilized this former lakeside for hunting and tool manufacturing. Beyond its historical importance, Isimila is famous for its dramatic landscape sculpted by erosion. Wind and water have carved impressive sandstone pillars and canyons over millennia, some rising up to 15 meters high. A small on-site museum displays the recovered tools and fossilized remains of extinct animal species. Today, the site remains a fascinating destination for both scientists and travelers exploring Tanzania's deep past.
