Werdenberg Castle (Switzerland)

Weather…

Werdenberg Castle is situated above the small town of the same name in the Rhine Valley and is considered one of the best-preserved late-medieval castle complexes in Eastern Switzerland. It was founded around 1230 by Count Rudolf I of Werdenberg as a noble residence and administrative center. The complex consists of a prominent keep, a palace, and a defensive curtain wall that connects directly to the historical wooden houses of the town below. Over the centuries, ownership passed from the Werdenberg family to the Barons of Sax and eventually to the Canton of Glarus in 1517. The last private owner, Frieda Hilty, bequeathed the castle to the Canton of St. Gallen in 1956. Today, the castle is part of a museum complex documenting the social history of the region and the daily lives of various social classes. The combination of the castle and the medieval town forms a monument of national significance.
