Chêne-Bourg
Chêne-Bourg is one of the smallest municipalities in Switzerland by area and is located in the eastern part of the Canton of Geneva. Despite its small size of only about 1.27 square kilometers, it has a very high population density. Together with Chêne-Bougeries and Thônex, the municipality forms the Trois-Chêne region. Geographically, the town is traversed by the small Seymaz river, which provides local recreation zones. The history of Chêne-Bourg is closely linked to the separation from Chêne-Bougeries in 1754, which was sealed by the Treaty of Turin between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Republic of Geneva. While Chêne-Bougeries remained with Geneva, Chêne-Bourg initially went to Savoy before finally becoming Swiss in 1816. Today, the municipality is an urban center with excellent connections to Geneva's city center via tram and the new Léman Express S-Bahn network. The architecture is characterized by a mix of historical buildings in the old village center and modern apartment blocks. The economy is primarily focused on services and small businesses, with many residents being commuters to the nearby city of Geneva. Due to its immediate proximity to the French border at Ambilly, the town is also an important hub for cross-border traffic.
