Storforsen (Sweden)

Weather…

Storforsen is one of the most powerful whitewater rapids in Europe, located on the Pite River in the Norrbotten province of northern Sweden. It is not a vertical waterfall but a massive series of rapids that drop a total of 82 meters over a distance of five kilometers, with the most dramatic fall occurring in the final 600 meters. The average water flow is approximately 250 cubic meters per second, but during the spring snowmelt, it can surge to over 870 cubic meters. Due to the immense velocity and friction of the water, the rapids never freeze, even during the harshest arctic winters. Historically, the area was a significant bottleneck for timber floating, and evidence of old wooden channels and booms can still be seen. The surrounding nature reserve hosts unique flora that thrives in the constant mist and high humidity. Today, Storforsen is a premier tourist destination, featuring extensive boardwalks for visitors to safely view the raging waters.
