SSAB Oxelösund is a world leader in the production of quenched and tempered heavy plate, serving as a critical pillar of Sweden's export-driven economy. The facility features a fully integrated production chain, from ironmaking in blast furnaces to final rolling, allowing for precise control over the steel's metallurgical properties. The plant is globally renowned for its high-performance brands, Hardox (wear-resistant steel) and Strenx (high-strength structural steel), which are essential for heavy construction and mining machinery. Ironworking in Oxelösund began in 1913, with the site benefiting immensely from its private deep-water port. This maritime access enables the efficient import of raw materials and the direct global shipping of finished steel plates. Oxelösund is at the heart of SSAB's green transition, with plans underway to replace blast furnaces with electric arc furnaces (EAF). Employing around 2,100 people, the steelworks defines the local municipality and stands as a symbol of advanced technological specialization in heavy manufacturing.
