Skellefteå Church (Sweden)

Weather…

Skellefteå Country Church, commonly referred to as Landskyrkan, is one of Sweden's largest and most architecturally significant rural churches. The current Neoclassical structure was designed by architect Jacob Rijf in the late 18th century and consecrated in 1800. It stands on a site with deep historical roots, where a stone church had already been established as early as the 14th century. The area is particularly famous for 'Bonnstan', a well-preserved church town consisting of over 100 traditional wooden houses used by parishioners traveling from afar to attend services. Inside, Landskyrkan has a spacious interior and houses precious artifacts, most notably the Skellefteå Madonna, a rare Romanesque wooden sculpture from the 12th century. For generations, the church served as the primary gathering point for the vast Skellefte River valley. Today, it remains an active place of worship and a premier cultural heritage site, illustrating the historical intersection of religious life and the social structures of Northern Sweden's rural population.
