Rättviks backe, or the Rättvik slope, is a prominent relief feature overlooking the village of Rättvik and the eastern shores of Lake Siljan in Dalarna. This area is geologically significant as it lies on the edge of the Siljan Ring, the largest impact crater in Europe, created by a meteorite about 377 million years ago. The slopes consist of sedimentary rock layers that were tilted and exposed during the impact, providing a unique view of Paleozoic history. Today, the area is well-known for its outdoor recreational opportunities, including the Rättviksbacken ski area which has panoramic views of the lake. The elevation change from the lake level to the top of the ridge is approximately 170 meters. In the summer, the hills are used for hiking and provide a backdrop to many traditional Dalarna cultural events like midsummer celebrations. The geological structure of the slopes supports a lime-loving flora including rare orchid species.

Getting there
Located immediately adjacent to the town of Rättvik in Dalarna, it is easily reached by car, train, or even on foot from the town center. Local roads wind directly up the gentle incline to the highest viewpoints.
Best season
Summer provides warm, pleasant weather well-suited for walking the forested ridge and gazing over Lake Siljan. Winter brings snow, briefly transforming the area into a modest, locally cherished alpine skiing slope.
Terrain & paths
The topography features a broad, gentle slope rising steadily from the lake, carved by a historical meteor impact. The ground is a mix of easy woodland trails, grassy clearings, and a dedicated ski run.
What to bring
Ordinary walking shoes and casual outdoor wear are entirely sufficient for exploring the paths during the green months. If visiting in winter for sports, bring standard alpine ski or snowboard equipment.
Parking
There is extensive, convenient parking available at the base near the town edge, and usually a smaller lot at the very top. These spaces easily accommodate visitors without the need for advanced planning.
Safety
The trails are generally safe, well-marked, and suitable for families with small children. In winter, pedestrians should stay off the actively used downhill ski runs to avoid colliding with fast skiers.
Time needed
Walking up to the viewpoint and back down is a pleasant excursion taking around one to two hours. Winter visitors might spend a full half-day enjoying the local downhill skiing and snowboard facilities.
