Luossavaara is one of the two iconic ore mountains in Kiruna, northern Sweden, with a history deeply tied to the region's industrial growth. Large-scale mining of high-grade magnetite iron ore began here in the early 20th century and continued until the mine was closed in the 1980s. Geologically, the mountain is part of a massive iron ore deposit that extends deep underground and was the primary reason for the town's founding. Since the cessation of mining, Luossavaara has been repurposed into a recreational area featuring ski slopes, hiking trails, and a mountain bike park. From its summit, visitors have an unparalleled view of the city of Kiruna, the neighboring active Kirunavaara mine, and the distant peaks of the Scandinavian Mountains. During the summer months, its location north of the Arctic Circle makes it a popular spot for viewing the midnight sun.

Getting there

The mountain forms a prominent backdrop to the city of Kiruna, making it very straightforward to access from the city center. A well-maintained local road leads partway up the slope, allowing vehicles to reach the main recreational areas.

In winter, it serves as a highly popular local ski slope, offering illuminated runs during the dark, cold arctic months. Summer transitions the area into a fantastic hiking spot, providing excellent opportunities to view the midnight sun.

Terrain & paths

The terrain is an accessible mix of former mining areas that have been successfully repurposed into smoothed ski slopes and clear hiking trails. While the incline can be steep, the main paths to the summit are broad and easy to follow.

What to bring

For winter visits, complete cold-weather snow gear, including thermal layers and ski equipment, is essential. Summer hikers simply need reliable walking shoes and perhaps a light windbreaker to stay comfortable at the exposed summit.

Parking

There is a generous parking area located directly at the base of the former mine, which now serves the ski lift and hiking trails. Parking is generally free and spacious enough to easily accommodate visitors throughout the year.

Safety

Although no longer an active mine, visitors must still avoid any fenced-off areas or steep, unmaintained drops off the main paths. The primary winter risks include severe cold temperatures and icy patches on the designated slopes.

A brisk walk up the mountain to take in the panoramic views of Kiruna and the surrounding wilderness takes about one to two hours. Winter sports enthusiasts often spend an entire morning or evening enjoying the local ski facilities.
