Eketorp Fortress (Sweden)

Weather…

Eketorp Fortress is a fully excavated and reconstructed ring fort located on the southern tip of the island of Öland. It stands as the only fortification of its kind in Sweden to be rebuilt on its original foundations to demonstrate Iron Age and medieval life. The fort's history is categorized into three distinct phases: the first beginning in the 4th century AD as a place of refuge, a second more densely populated phase during the Migration Period, and a final medieval garrison phase in the 12th century. Within the massive circular wall, visitors can explore reconstructed dwellings, stables, and workshops that offer profound insights into daily survival and ancient defensive tactics. Archaeological finds, including jewelry, weapons, and tools, prove the wealth and extensive trade networks of its past inhabitants. Today, Eketorp serves as a living open-air museum where traditional crafts and archery are regularly demonstrated. The site is a key component of the Agricultural Landscape of Southern Öland, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
