Sierra Nevada (Spain)

Weather…

The Sierra Nevada, which translates to "snow-covered mountain range", is an impressive high mountain system located in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia. It represents the highest elevation on the Iberian Peninsula and is significantly dominated by its main peak, the 3479-meter-high Mulhacén. Geologically, the massif belongs to the Baetic System, which was formed during the Alpine orogeny. Despite its southern geographical location, in close proximity to the warm Mediterranean Sea and the African continent, the Sierra Nevada hosts the southernmost major ski resort in Europe. The extreme climatic conditions, fluctuating between hot summers and snowy winters, have led to the development of a unique flora. Over sixty endemic plant species have adapted to these specific harsh habitats. In the year 1986, UNESCO officially recognized the extraordinary ecological importance of the region by declaring it a Biosphere Reserve.
