💡 Tips
- Capileira is one of Spain's highest villages, and parking is limited. Arrive early in the day to find a spot in the lower part of the village, then walk up.
- The best light for photographing the Poqueira Gorge and the white houses is early morning or late afternoon. Midday haze can reduce visibility.
- Even in summer, the evenings can be cool. Bring an extra layer of clothing, especially if you plan an evening hike.
- Look out for the many public fountains ('fuentes') with fresh, drinkable mountain water. It's delicious and free, so fill up your bottle.
🍽 Food
A hearty plate of fried potatoes, chorizo, blood sausage, Serrano ham, and fried eggs. You'll find it in almost any local restaurant, well-suited after a hike.
Try the famous air-cured ham from the neighbouring village of Trevélez. It's often served as a tapa in local bars or can be bought in food shops.
A traditional, rustic dish made from fried breadcrumbs with garlic, often served with peppers or fish. Look for a traditional restaurant to try this authentic speciality.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
These are colourful, thick rugs and textiles traditionally woven in the region. Look for small workshops ('talleres') where they are still made by hand.
Look for hand-painted pottery in the traditional Granadino style (often with green and blue patterns). Several small shops in the village sell pieces from local artisans.
Buy local honey ('miel'), cheese ('queso'), or artisanal jams. These products reflect the unique flora of the high mountain region.
A sweeping viewpoint at the top end of the village, offering panoramic views over the Poqueira Valley and down to the coast. Good for sunset.
Leave the main street and explore the steep, narrow lanes of the Barrio Alto. It's much quieter here and you can admire the traditional Alpujarran architecture.
A well-marked trail connects Capileira to the neighbouring village of Bubión. A walk along this path has peace and beautiful views away from the main tourist drag.
Water temperature…
Capileira is the highest of the three famous villages in the Poqueira Valley, sitting at 1436 meters above sea level. The entire village is a protected historical site, having preserved its authentic Moorish layout almost perfectly. The architecture features whitewashed houses with flat roofs ('terraos') and iconic round chimneys that look like small hats. The steep, cobbled streets are lined with flower pots and offer sweeping views of the Sierra Nevada peaks at every turn. The village serves as an official gateway to the Sierra Nevada National Park. It is the starting point for shuttle buses and hiking trails heading to Mulhacén (3479 m), the highest peak in mainland Spain. In the town center stands the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza, built on the site of a former mosque. The Pedro Antonio de Alarcón Ethnological Museum details the rugged mountain life of past centuries. Gastronomically, Capileira is famed for its hearty mountain cuisine, with 'Sopa de Ajo' (garlic soup) and local cheeses being must-try specialties. Spring is the good season for hikers when broom flowers turn the slopes yellow, or autumn for its crystal-clear vistas. Despite its tourist appeal, Capileira maintains a peaceful, almost meditative atmosphere.
