The Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid is a tranquil, historic oasis in the heart of the Spanish capital, located right next to the famous Prado Museum. Its origins date back to 1755 under King Ferdinand VI, before it was moved to its current location on the Paseo del Prado in 1781 by King Charles III. The garden was designed in a classic, strictly geometric terraced structure and today houses an impressive collection of over 5,000 living plant species from all continents. Among the institution's scientific treasures is a gigantic herbarium preserving historical specimens from the Spanish expeditions to the New World. The ornate greenhouses, including the historic Villanueva greenhouse, along with the shaded avenues and delicate fountains, make the Botanical Garden an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage site 'Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro.'
