The AZCA district (Asociación Mixta de Compensación de la Manzana A der Zona Comercial de la Avenida del Generalísimo) forms the historical financial heart of modern Madrid. Conceived in the 1950s after the ambitious model of New York's Rockefeller Center, this superblock-like area combines deep underground transport infrastructure with soaring office towers. It is the traditional headquarters of powerful Spanish institutions, major insurance companies, and retail chains. Among the most striking buildings is the brilliantly white Torre Picasso, which for a long time was the tallest building in the capital. With its interwoven levels separating pedestrian zones from busy road networks, AZCA remains a key urban planning element for economic densification along the central artery, Paseo de la Castellana.
