Almería Greenhouses (Spain)

Weather…

The greenhouses of Almería form the largest concentration of agricultural covered structures worldwide and have transformed the arid, semi-desert land of southern Spain into a highly productive agricultural industry. This 'Mar de Plástico' (Sea of Plastic) spans an almost unimaginably vast area of over 30,000 hectares and is easily recognizable even from outer space due to its enormous extent and white reflection. Through the use of extremely resource-efficient techniques such as computer-controlled drip irrigation and the use of solar energy for desalination, huge quantities of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and melons are produced here year-round. This agro-technological masterpiece supplies a large part of the European winter market with fresh vegetables, but at the same time faces major challenges regarding water resources and social working conditions. Nevertheless, Almería remains a prime example for the export of agricultural technology and intensified farming.
