Ribadeo is located in the northeastern corner of Galicia, overlooking the Eo River estuary which forms the natural border with the neighboring region of Asturias. The town is defined by its maritime heritage and the distinctive 19th and early 20th-century architecture funded by returning emigrants known as 'Indianos'. The most prominent example is the Torre dos Moreno, an eclectic modernist building from 1915 that commands attention in the town square with its complex roofline and decorative tiles. A few kilometers west along the coast lies Ribadeo's most famous natural attraction, the Playa de las Catedrales (Cathedrals Beach). Here, the pounding waves of the Cantabrian Sea have carved massive 30-meter high rock arches and deep sea caves into the slate cliffs, which can only be fully explored by walking on the sand during low tide. The local cuisine emphasizes robust coastal flavors, with dishes such as white beans with clams and various preparations of line-caught squid serving as staples.
