Pico Almanzor (Spain)

Weather…

Pico Almanzor is an impressive granite peak and, with an altitude of 2592 meters, the highest elevation of both the Sierra de Gredos and the entire Central System that crosses the Iberian Peninsula. It is located in the province of Ávila in Castile and León, rising majestically above the vast plains of the Meseta. Its striking, pointed profile, which strongly resembles a horn, was shaped by extreme Pleistocene glaciation that carved deep cirques and rugged ridges into the hard Hercynian granite. Historically, the prominent mountain was named after Al-Mansur, a powerful and widely feared Moorish military leader of the 10th century, reflecting the prolonged presence of the Moors in the region. Today, Almanzor is an absolute magnet for experienced alpinists and mountaineers, as the ascent across the scree and jagged rock is highly demanding. The view from the extremely narrow summit provides a spectacular 360-degree panorama over large parts of central Spain on clear days.
