Petrel (locally known as Petrer) is a town with deep historical roots in the Alicante province. The most prominent landmark is the Castillo de Petrer, a 12th-century fortress perched on a hill, offering spectacular views over the Vinalopó Valley. The old town, with its narrow streets and whitewashed houses, invites exploration of its Moorish heritage. The town is worldwide famous for its high-quality footwear industry, particularly women's shoes. Visitors can visit factories and purchase local products in numerous shops. Culturally, Petrel is renowned for the 'Moros y Cristianos' festival, celebrated annually with magnificent parades and historical costumes. The San Bartolomé Church with its striking blue dome is another architectural highlight. Petrel is easily accessible via the A-31 motorway and is just a short drive from Alicante and the airport. The surrounding mountain landscape, such as the Sierra del Cid, features excellent opportunities for hiking and climbing.
