Established in 1478 by Spanish conquistador Juan Rejón, it became a vital stopover for ships sailing between Europe and the Americas. Christopher Columbus visited the city in 1492 during his first voyage to repair one of his vessels, an event commemorated at the Casa de Colón in the historic Vegueta district.
