Tower of Hercules (Spain)

Weather…

The Tower of Hercules (Torre de Hércules) in the Galician port city of A Coruña is a spectacular architectural marvel, as it is the only Roman lighthouse in the world that is still in operation. Built in the 1st century AD by the Roman architect Gaius Sevius Lupus from Coimbra, the striking tower served as a vital beacon for sailors navigating the treacherous Atlantic coastline, famously feared by the Romans as the "Costa da Morte" (Coast of Death). Standing 55 meters tall, the structure rests on a rocky cliff, offering a dramatic view over the crashing waves of the ocean. Originally, the tower featured an external spiral ramp for transporting fuel to the beacon. In the late 18th century, by order of King Charles III, the architect Eustaquio Giannini wrapped the building in a comprehensive neoclassical facade, which elegantly conceals and simultaneously preserves the ancient core structure. Today, the Tower of Hercules is not merely an active maritime signal, but also a proud symbol of the city and a recognized UNESCO World Heritage site since 2009.
