The Alcázar of Jerez de la Frontera is a monumental fortified complex that reflects Andalusia's rich Moorish past. Most of the current structure dates back to the 12th-century Almohad period, serving as both a residence for local rulers and a military stronghold. Within its massive walls lie a well-preserved mosque, later converted into a chapel, and characteristic Arabic baths with star-shaped ceiling openings. A standout feature is the octagonal tower, a masterpiece of defensive architecture from that era. In the 17th century, the complex was augmented by the Baroque-style Villavicencio Palace, which now houses a camera obscura. The gardens inside the Alcázar offer a peaceful atmosphere and illustrate the Islamic concept of paradise. As one of the few examples of Almohad architecture in Spain that has survived almost in its entirety, the Alcázar is an indispensable cultural monument of the region.
