Founded in the 9th century as a Moorish fortress on the Manzanares River, it now showcases a blend of Habsburg architecture and modern skyscrapers. The 'Golden Triangle of Art,' comprising the Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums, makes Madrid a global hub for painting. City life is characterized by an animated culinary scene and expansive parks like Casa de Campo, which is five times the size of New York's Central Park. The fully renovated Santiago Bernabéu Stadium opened in 2024 with retractable pitch and roof, and hosted its first NFL regular-season game in September 2025. Stadium tours are available year-round.

May-June and September-October are ideal: pleasant 20-28°C and long evenings on terraces. July and August are brutally hot (often over 38°C) and many locals flee to the coast. Winter is crisp and cold — perfect for museums and churros with hot chocolate.
Sol, Gran Via and Metro Line 5 are pickpocket hotspots — especially at ATMs and in crowded carriages. Lavapies and Tirso de Molina are lively by day but stay alert at night. Cañada Real and outer suburbs hold no interest for tourists and aren't recommended.
Madrid speaks classic Castilian Spanish, with the typical lisped 'c' and 'z' sounds. English works in hotels and bigger restaurants, but in tapas bars and taxis, 'hola', 'gracias' and 'la cuenta, por favor' go a long way. Locals talk fast and loud — that's just the Madrid energy, not an argument.
