💡 Tips
- The main attraction is the Cathedral of Justo; go early in the morning for the best light and fewer crowds.
- Be respectful as the cathedral is an ongoing project built by volunteers entirely out of recycled materials.
- The town is easily accessible by a short bus ride from Madrid (e.g., from Avenida de América).
- Combine your visit to the cathedral with a nature walk in the nearby Parque Regional del Sureste.
- Remember that many small shops close during the afternoon siesta, so plan your activities accordingly.
🍽 Food
Enjoy traditional Spanish tapas like patatas bravas and calamares at bars around the main square.
Find a local churreria in the morning for freshly fried churros with a cup of hot chocolate.
Look for this hearty chickpea and meat stew in traditional restaurants, especially comforting in winter.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Check out the indoor municipal market for fresh regional produce and local ingredients.
Sometimes small tokens or postcards are available for a donation inside the Cathedral.
A large protected natural area nearby, great for birdwatching and peaceful walks.
A nice spot to sit on a bench and soak in the local atmosphere away from the cathedral.

Mejorada del Campo, a town in the Community of Madrid, is home to one of the world's most extraordinary architectural projects: the Cathedral of Justo Gallego Martínez. This former monk began building a massive cathedral in 1961 out of an act of faith, with no architectural training and using almost exclusively recycled and donated materials. For over 60 years, he dedicated his life to this project, creating a structure of astonishing proportions with a dome modeled on St. Peter's Basilica, intricate stained glass windows, and towering columns. The building is a labyrinth of bricks, concrete, and found objects, a true testament to human determination and creativity. The Cathedral, often described as 'outsider architecture,' has become the town's main attraction, drawing visitors from all over the world. The town itself is located to the east of Madrid and is easily accessible by public transport, making it a popular day trip. Beyond the cathedral, Mejorada del Campo is a modern suburban community. However, a visit here is above all a tribute to the incredible vision and tireless dedication of one man who built his dream.
