💡 Tips

  • El Rocío village has unpaved, sandy streets, so leave the high heels behind and wear sturdy, closed shoes.
  • Book Doñana National Park 4x4 tours well in advance, as they sell out quickly during peak times.
  • The village is incredibly quiet most of the year, but absolutely packed with people and horses during the Pentecost pilgrimage.
  • Try to catch the sunset over the marshes, which is also the best time for birdwatching.

Almonte, in Huelva, is inextricably linked to two Spanish icons: the Doñana National Park and the El Rocío pilgrimage. Its municipality includes most of Doñana, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Europe's most important wetlands, home to an incredible biodiversity of birds, including flamingos and the Iberian lynx. Every year at Pentecost, the village of El Rocío becomes the destination for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims for the Romería, one of Spain's most famous religious celebrations. Brotherhoods from all over Andalusia arrive on horseback and in decorated wagons to honour the Virgin of El Rocío. Almonte's cuisine reflects its surroundings, with specialities like game meat, seafood from the nearby Atlantic, and wines from the Condado de Huelva. The town is a blend of tradition and nature. The town is easily reached by car from Seville (approx. 60 km) and Huelva. Spring is the good time to visit, to witness the spectacular pilgrimage and enjoy the blossoming nature of Doñana before the intense summer heat sets in.
