Old Fangak is a historically significant town in the Jonglei State of South Sudan, situated within the expansive Sudd wetlands along the Bahr el Zeraf river. Originally, the town served as the administrative center for the Zeraf District during the Anglo-Egyptian colonial period, acting as a key post for monitoring river traffic through the difficult-to-navigate channels. Due to its isolated location in the marshes, the town developed into a major cultural hub for the Nuer people of the region. During the Sudanese civil wars, the administrative functions were relocated to New Fangak, but Old Fangak remained a critical junction for humanitarian aid and local governance. The settlement is accessible only by air or boat, which emphasizes its strategic importance as a sanctuary during times of conflict. The history of the site is deeply intertwined with the ecological cycles of the Nile and the traditional lifestyles of the pastoralists in the Sudd swamp.
