Highveld Plateau (South Africa)

Weather…

The Highveld Plateau is a vast inland plateau in South Africa, situated at altitudes ranging between 1200 and 1800 meters above sea level. It encompasses most of the Gauteng and Free State provinces, as well as parts of Mpumalanga, forming the industrial and economic core of the country. Geologically, the Highveld is world-renowned for the Witwatersrand Basin, which contains the world's largest known gold deposits and led to the rapid development of Johannesburg after 1886. The landscape is predominantly flat to gently undulating grasslands, much of which has been converted to intensive commercial farming for maize and sunflowers. The climate is characterized by mild, sunny summers with dramatic late-afternoon thunderstorms and dry, cold winters with frequent overnight frost. In addition to gold, the plateau is rich in coal reserves, making it the hub of South Africa's power generation industry. Despite heavy industrialization and urban sprawl, areas like the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve offer a glimpse into the original high-altitude grassland biome and its native wildlife.
