Hobyo is a historic port city located in the Mudug region of the Galmudug State in Somalia. Founded in the 13th century as a key commercial outpost of the Ajuran Sultanate, Hobyo later became the capital of the powerful Sultanate of Hobyo under Sultan Yusuf Ali Kenadid in the late 19th century. The city is strategically positioned along the Indian Ocean and served for centuries as a major transshipment point for textiles, sugar, rice, and exotic goods from India and Arabia. Geographically, the town is surrounded by expansive sand dunes and coral reefs, which historically complicated the development of a modern deep-water port. Today, Hobyo remains a symbol of Somalia's cultural heritage, featuring ruins of ancient forts and palaces that testify to its former glory. The local economy is still driven by fishing and small-scale trade, while ongoing plans for port expansion aim to revitalize the economy of the entire Galmudug region.
