Istana Kampong Glam (Singapore)

Weather…

Istana Kampong Glam is a former Malay palace located in the heart of the historic Kampong Glam district in Singapore. The current structure was commissioned between 1840 and 1843 for Sultan Ali Iskandar Shah, the son of Sultan Hussein Shah. The design is widely attributed to the prominent colonial architect George Drumgoole Coleman, featuring a blend of Palladian architecture and traditional Malay motifs. For generations, the palace served as the official residence of the Johor royal family in Singapore before being acquired by the state in the late 20th century. Following extensive restoration works, the building was reopened in 2005 as the Malay Heritage Centre, a museum dedicated to preserving the culture and history of the Malay community. Surrounded by landscaped gardens, the palace remains a vital cultural focal point in the Muslim Quarter. On December 1, 2015, Istana Kampong Glam was officially gazetted as a National Monument, recognizing its enduring historical importance.
