Bukit Brown Cemetery (Singapore)

Weather…

Bukit Brown Cemetery was officially established in 1922 as a public Chinese cemetery and grew to become the largest of its kind outside mainland China. Spanning approximately 233 hectares, the site contains an estimated 100,000 graves, including the final resting places of many of Singapore's prominent pioneers and historical figures. The funerary architecture found here is a unique synthesis of traditional Chinese motifs and European design elements, such as colorful Peranakan tiles and ornate stone carvings. During World War II, the grounds served as a battlefield, eventually leading to the cemetery's closure for new burials in 1973. Currently, Bukit Brown is valued not only for its historical significance but also as a major ecological hub with rich biodiversity and mature tropical vegetation. Despite ongoing urban development challenges, heritage groups advocate for its preservation as a vital link to the region's complex migratory and social history.
