Grand Barbe (Seychelles)

Weather…

Grand Barbe is a remote area located on the western coast of Silhouette Island, the third largest in the Seychelles. It is renowned for hosting one of the archipelago's largest wetlands, featuring a significant ecosystem of mangroves and freshwater marshes. Historically, Grand Barbe was a thriving settlement with over 50 residents who sustained themselves through copra production and fishing. Today, the village is almost entirely abandoned, with only a few ruins remaining as a testament to its past. The region is framed by the island’s highest peaks, such as Mont Dauban, and is accessible only via a strenuous multi-hour hike through dense rainforest or by boat during calm sea conditions. The pristine sandy beach at Grand Barbe serves as a critical nesting site for sea turtles. The area is part of the Silhouette Marine National Park and provides a sanctuary for numerous rare species, including the Seychelles giant tortoise, which has been successfully reintroduced here.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this remote plateau usually requires a highly challenging hike across the island's mountainous interior or arranging a chartered boat trip directly to the western coast.
📅
Best season
The drier months from May to September are definitely optimal for trekking, as the steep jungle trails become dangerously muddy, slick, and treacherous during heavy rains.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Expect very rugged, unpaved muddy paths winding tightly through dense tropical forest, crossing numerous streams, and eventually descending towards coastal mangroves.
🎒
What to bring
High-quality hiking boots, long breathable trousers, massive amounts of drinking water, and heavy-duty insect repellent are totally essential for crossing the jungle safely.
🅿️
Parking
There are absolutely no public roads or cars on the island; journeys begin entirely on foot from the main settlement of La Passe where the boat ferries drop off all visitors.
⚠️
Safety
The trek is physically exhausting and trails are frequently poorly marked or overgrown; hiring a knowledgeable local guide is very strongly advised to prevent getting utterly lost.
⏱️
Time needed
A complete round trip strictly by foot can easily take six to eight full hours, making it a serious full-day adventure requiring a very early departure and careful time management.
