Glacis Noir (Black Rock) (Seychelles)

Weather…

Glacis Noir is a prominent hill on Praslin Island, located in close proximity to the famous Vallée de Mai. The name 'Black Rock' refers to the dark granite formations that are characteristic of this region. A marked hiking trail leads through a secondary forest rich in endemic plant species, including all six palm species native to the Seychelles. Halfway along the path, the trail has views into the dense vegetation where the rare Seychelles Black Parrot can often be spotted. At the end of the trail stands an old fire lookout tower, providing a spectacular view of neighboring La Digue, Félicité, and the Sister Islands. The area plays an important role in local fire protection management for the drier regions of Praslin. The trail is less frequented than the nearby Vallée de Mai, offering hikers a quieter atmosphere surrounded by nature's biodiversity.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This distinctive viewpoint is typically reached on foot via the established trail network of the Praslin National Park; the starting point is very often the Vallée de Mai or a similar visitor center along the main island road.
📅
Best season
The slightly cooler and drier months spanning from May to September offer the most comfortable climate for the ascent, and frequently the clearest possible views over the lush island and surrounding azure Indian Ocean waters.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The path consists of well-trodden tropical dirt trails and prominent, sometimes smooth granite rocks; while the terrain rises moderately at first, the final stretch to the dark rocks requires a degree of basic sure-footedness.
🎒
What to bring
Lightweight, breathable footwear with a gripping rubber sole, tropical-friendly clothing, powerful sun protection, and a bottle of water are entirely sufficient for this relatively short but undoubtedly sweaty island excursion.
🅿️
Parking
Rental cars can be comfortably parked in the guarded parking lots of the Vallée de Mai or other official park entrances, from where the vast majority of visitors reliably begin their hikes into the island's protected nature.
⚠️
Safety
Always stay on the formally marked trails to avoid getting lost in the dense island forest, and never climb carelessly on the smooth edges of the granite boulders, as a fall here could easily result in severe physical injuries.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical hike from the main centers to this striking viewpoint and completely back generally takes about one to two hours, nicely including ample time for taking photographs and thoroughly admiring the wide landscape views.
