Pointe des Almadies (Senegal)

Weather…

Pointe des Almadies is the westernmost point of the African continent, located on the Cap Vert peninsula in Dakar. This prominent landmark is characterized by volcanic rock formations and the powerful surf of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the strong currents and treacherous reefs in the area, the Almadies lighthouse was established as early as 1848 to ensure maritime safety. The area is a favorite destination for surfers from around the world, offering some of the most consistent waves in West Africa. Numerous seafood restaurants line the coast, known for their fresh catches and expansive ocean views. Pointe des Almadies also marks a significant oceanographic boundary where different sea currents meet, resulting in highly productive fishing grounds. Despite tourism development, the site has retained its rugged, maritime character and stands as a symbol of Senegal's geographic position as the gateway to the Atlantic.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Readily reachable by standard taxi or private car from virtually anywhere within Dakar, as it sits in a globally well-known, upscale neighborhood. The actual westernmost rocky point is just a very short, pleasant walk from the bustling cluster of local seafood restaurants.
📅
Best season
It is considered genuinely great to visit in absolutely any month of the year, but the marginally cooler months spanning from November to May are particularly pleasant for strolling along the rugged coast and enjoying extended outdoor dining.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The surrounding urban area features solidly paved local roads seamlessly leading right down to the rocky shorelines and small sandy patches. The immediate, natural coastal edge is noticeably uneven, but it remains very easily manageable for a casual, slow walk.
🎒
What to bring
Casual, highly comfortable everyday clothing and perhaps a light jacket or sweater for the frequently brisk evening ocean breeze are usually entirely sufficient. Definitely bring a quality camera to beautifully capture the dramatically crashing waves and the spectacular sunset.
🅿️
Parking
Ample dedicated parking is typically found right near the many restaurants, cafes, and large hotels continuously lining the prominent peninsula. Be aware that these spaces can get quite crowded and busy during spirited local weekends and national holidays.
⚠️
Safety
Always be appropriately careful when walking directly on the exposed rocks near the deep water, as they can be unexpectedly slippery and Atlantic waves can be powerful. The area is generally quite safe, but do keep a close eye on personal belongings in crowded spots.
⏱️
Time needed
People very often choose to spend around two to three unhurried hours here, wonderfully combining a symbolic walk down to the westernmost tip of the continent with a long meal at one of the rustic waterfront seafood shacks.
