Madeleine Islands (Senegal)

Weather…

The Madeleine Islands are located about four kilometers west of Dakar and constitute Senegal's smallest national park, established in 1976. The archipelago consists of two uninhabited main islands, with Sarpan Island being the larger of the two. These islands are of volcanic origin and consist primarily of basalt rock rising steeply from the Atlantic. A unique feature of Sarpan Island is the presence of dwarf baobab trees, which have adapted to the strong sea winds and salt spray by developing an unusually stunted and gnarled growth habit. The park serves as a critical breeding ground for rare seabirds, particularly the red-billed tropicbird, for which the islands are one of the few nesting sites in West Africa. Underwater, the park's rock formations and clear waters provide excellent conditions for snorkeling and diving, hosting a rich variety of fish and crustaceans. Visiting the islands is strictly regulated and only possible via authorized boats from Dakar to protect the fragile ecosystem.
