Mamelles Lighthouse (Senegal)

Weather…

The Mamelles Lighthouse stands on the higher of the two volcanic hills on the Cap Vert peninsula near Dakar, serving as a vital navigational landmark at Africa's westernmost tip. Completed in 1864, it is one of the oldest and most powerful lighthouses on the continent. The white cylindrical tower has a height of 16 meters, but its elevation on the 105-meter-high hill allows its light signal to reach up to 31 nautical miles into the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse marks the westernmost point of the African mainland and is a critical point of orientation for vessels passing along the African coast or entering the port of Dakar. The site has visitors spectacular panoramic views of Dakar, Gorée Island, and the vast ocean beyond. Despite modern GPS technology, the lighthouse remains fully operational and is managed by keepers who maintain its historic Fresnel lens. The tower's architecture is simple and functional, yet it exudes a timeless maritime elegance.
