The Mbao forest area, officially known as the 'Forêt Classée de Mbao,' is the last large contiguous green space in the urban metropolitan area of Dakar. This protected area covers approximately 771 hectares and functions as an essential 'green lung' for the Senegalese capital by filtering CO2 and regulating the local microclimate. Geologically, the area sits on sandy Quaternary deposits that form a significant groundwater reservoir for the surrounding neighborhoods. The vegetation consists of a mix of native tree species such as baobabs and acacias, alongside planted eucalyptus trees for soil stabilization.
