Historic Jeddah (Al-Balad) (Saudi Arabia)

Weather…

Al-Balad is the historic heart of Jeddah, established in the 7th century as a vital gateway for pilgrims traveling to Mecca. The district is world-famous for its unique architectural heritage, defined by multi-story houses built from Red Sea coral stones and adorned with intricately carved wooden balconies known as Roshan. This indigenous design facilitated natural ventilation and provided privacy within the dense urban fabric of narrow alleys. For centuries, Al-Balad served as the city's commercial epicenter, home to prosperous merchant families. In 2014, the district was recognized for its outstanding universal value and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Among its most significant landmarks is the Nasseef House, built in the late 19th century, which once served as a residence for King Abdulaziz. Today, Al-Balad is a lively open-air museum where traditional souks, historic mosques, and meticulously renovated townhouses reflect the region's rich maritime and trading history. Ongoing restoration efforts are preserving these fragile coral structures for future generations.
