Colle di Borgo
Colle di Borgo is the strategic hill located at the foot of Monte Titano, serving as the site for the town of Borgo Maggiore. At an elevation of approximately 500 meters, this height has been the economic and commercial hub of the Republic of San Marino since the 13th century. The hill is famous for its historic marketplace, the Mercatale, which has hosted fairs and daily trade for centuries. The architecture on Colle di Borgo is characterized by medieval alleys and typical porticoed buildings that provided shelter for merchants. Geologically, the hill consists of a blend of sandstone and limestone, forming a transitional zone between the plains and the sheer cliffs of the main mountain. A cable car directly connects Colle di Borgo with the historic center of San Marino City on the summit of Monte Titano. The area has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008, preserving the traditions of Sammarinese hospitality and commerce. Hiking paths like the Costa dell'Arnella climb steeply up the hill, linking the different levels of the republic.
