Mount Mafane is a significant volcanic peak located on the island of Savai'i, within the central highlands. Reaching an altitude of approximately 1,024 meters, it is part of the island's primary volcanic axis which consists of hundreds of volcanic cones. The mountain is surrounded by an extensive primary rainforest that hosts a high degree of endemic biodiversity. Geologically, it is a shield volcano feature characterized by basaltic rock formations and fertile soil. The area around Mount Mafane is crucial for the island's water catchment system, providing freshwater to numerous downstream communities. Due to its remote location and steep terrain, the mountain remains largely untouched by modern development. It is an important site for ecological research and conservation efforts aimed at protecting Samoa's unique upland ecosystems and rare bird species.

Deeply situated in the rugged central highlands of Savai'i, this peak is extremely remote. A local expedition guide and official permission from the surrounding customary villages are critical to attempt this journey.

Best season

Expeditions should only be planned during the driest months of July and August to ensure the safest possible conditions. The severe wet season renders the highland access routes dangerous and completely impassable.

The terrain is incredibly challenging, featuring steep inclines, dense, untracked rainforest, and potentially jagged volcanic formations. There are no marked paths, requiring intensive bushwhacking through wilderness.

Heavy-duty jungle trekking gear, including machetes for clearing paths, gaiters, and a comprehensive first aid kit, are essential. You must carry all necessary provisions, including shelter and water purification.
