Pe'ape'a Cave (Samoa)

Weather…

Pe'ape'a Cave is an impressive lava tube located in the O Le Pupu-Pu'e National Park on the island of Upolu. This natural cave was formed during a prehistoric volcanic eruption when the outer layer of a lava flow cooled and solidified while the liquid lava inside continued to flow and eventually drained away. The cave is named after the Pe'ape'a, small white-rumped swiftlets that nest in the darkness of the cave and navigate using echolocation. Visitors can venture about 100 meters deep into the interior, where the walls still show the flow marks of the former lava. The floor is often damp and slippery, making sturdy footwear and a flashlight necessary. The cool air inside provides a welcome contrast to the tropical heat outside. Pe'ape'a Cave is an excellent example of Samoa's volcanic geology and has a unique insight into the forces that shaped the archipelago.
