Fagaloa Bay Cliffs (Samoa)

Weather…

The Fagaloa Bay Cliffs on the northeast coast of Upolu are among Samoa's most spectacular coastal formations. These massive, nearly vertical cliffs plunge from heights of several hundred meters directly into the Pacific Ocean, testifying to the erosive power of the sea and tectonic uplift. Geologically, the cliffs consist of ancient, resistant volcanic rocks from the Fagaloa volcanic series, the oldest rock formation on Upolu. The region surrounding the bay is renowned for its deep valleys and numerous waterfalls that cascade down the cliffs after heavy rains. Due to the extreme steepness, the area is largely uninhabited, providing a sanctuary for rare seabirds and pristine flora. Fagaloa Bay itself is a deeply indented, fjord-like inlet that has a natural harbor. In Samoan history, the bay is regarded as a site of great significance for resistance against colonial powers and as a cultural center for traditional crafts. The contrast between the deep blue water and the lush green of the forested cliffs makes this location a scenic jewel.
