Fangaloa Ancient Village (Samoa)

Weather…

Fangaloa Bay, situated on the northeastern coast of Upolu Island, hosts some of Samoa's oldest settlement remains, tracing back to the Lapita era. The geographic isolation created by steep mountain ridges, reaching heights of up to 1000 meters, preserved traditional social structures and architectural forms over many centuries. Archaeological excavations in the 1970s unearthed ceramic shards and stone tools proving continuous habitation since approximately 1000 BCE. The region is famous for its dramatic cliffs and numerous waterfalls plunging directly into the Pacific Ocean, which provided a strategic refuge during pre-colonial times. Today, the area is regarded as a cultural heritage site of national importance, demonstrating the tight link between the physical environment and the social organization of Samoan clans (Aiga). Oral traditions also connect Fangaloa with significant legends regarding the origins of the island's most ancient chiefly lineages.
