Asau is the administrative and commercial hub of the Vaisigano district, located in the northwestern corner of Savai'i island. Geographically, the town is distinguished by its deep natural harbor, sheltered by a reef, which once played a critical role in Samoa's timber industry. During the 1960s and 70s, Asau was a booming industrial site until ecological shifts and the closure of the large sawmill transformed the local economy. Today, the port primarily accommodates smaller vessels and yachts, though there are ongoing efforts to revitalize it as a regional trade gateway. The surroundings of Asau are characterized by rugged volcanic terrain and vast rainforests, comprising some of Samoa's most remote areas. The village has a well-developed infrastructure, including schools, a hospital, and government offices, underscoring its role as a regional center. Culturally, Asau remains deeply embedded in Samoan traditions, with fishing still being a vital component of daily subsistence and local commerce.
